Rodeo Barrel Racing: Tips for Beginners

November 14, 2024

In part one of this two-part blog series, we went over some basics on barrel racing, one of the most popular and well-known rodeo events. Barrel racing involves riders on horses circling large barrels as quickly as possible, hence the name, and there are a few basics to be aware of if you're looking to get into barrel racing in any way.

At A Cut Above Buckles, we offer a wide range of belt buckles and other Western and rodeo accessories for clients around Utah and Texas, including our Competitor Series and more. While part one of our series looked at the attire and horse needs you want to be thinking about for barrel racing, today's part two will detail a few specifics that beginners should keep in mind as they get started in this enjoyable pursuit.

Saddle Considerations

One of the first and most important things to consider when getting into barrel racing is the saddle you'll be using. Because this event involves a lot of movement and speed, your saddle needs to offer excellent stability and balance for both yourself and your horse.

Many riders prefer specialized barrel racing saddles, which have shorter skirts that allow for greater flexibility and range of motion during the event. You'll also want a saddle with a deep seat, high cantle, and large swells to help keep you in place during those tight turns.

Horse Fitness

Barrel racing requires your horse to be fit and strong in order to perform at its best. As such, one of the main things we recommend for beginners is to put their horses through regular exercises and conditioning routines, both on and off the barrel course itself. Working on strength, agility, and speed will all help your horse excel at barrel racing.

Training

While we discussed some training tips in our previous post, it's important to reiterate just how much proper training can help you and your horse succeed in barrel racing. Start with basic obedience and groundwork before moving onto more advanced maneuvers and techniques. And remember, patience and consistency are key when it comes to training horses for barrel racing.

Mental Preparation

Finally, don't underestimate the importance of mental preparation in barrel racing. This event requires a lot of focus, quick thinking, and split-second decision making, so it's important to train your mind as well as your body. Visualization exercises, positive affirmations, and staying calm under pressure can all help you perform your best in the arena.

We hope these tips have been helpful for beginners looking to get into barrel racing! And don't forget to check out our selection of custom belt buckles and other rodeo accessories at A Cut Above Buckles. We're here to help with all your Western and other accessory needs.
